1.2.3. Focus THURSDAY

Hey Everyone,

The last week has changed how most of us go about our day to day lives pretty drastically. I found myself feeling quite out of control and overwhelmed yesterday. The half box of Costco cookies I ate empirically demonstrated just how out of control I was. That being said I had to take a step back and refocus – take a good hard look at the things that I do have control over in my life. One of those things was being connected to my community. Ironically yesterday when I was deciding whether or not to close the office, I reflected on just how much I enjoy seeing patients and working with the people that I’m fortunate to spend a big percentage of my life with. I was filled with a ton of gratitude. In the name of staying connected I decided to copy a mentor of mine’s email structure and start a Thursday newsletter to connect with everyone. Here’s my first shot and I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,

Dr. Tony

Some Humor

The best doctor’s advice I can give you right now is: Don’t cook bacon naked.

2 Quotes

My friend Sunil and I are committed to sending each other one joke or one quote every day as a way to connect. The quote he shared with me today really resonated:

“Happiness is the art of making a bouquet out of those flowers within reach.”

This poem, “Push”, that I came across in the book, The Man Watching : A Biography of Anson Dorrance, the Unlikely Architect of the Greatest College Sports Dynasty Ever is something that I refer to often:

The challenge isn’t someone else

The challenge is within

It’s the aching in your lungs

And the burning in your legs

And the voice that yells can’t

But you don’t listen

You just push harder

Then you hear a voice whisper can

And you realize the person you thought you were

Is no match for the one you really are

3. Ideas Mind, Body, Soul

MIND:

Right now there are a lot of things that we just can’t control and when I focus on those things I feel so much anxiety and stress. My heart rate increases, my mind races, and to be frank I feel scared as hell. Instead of doing that, let’s decide to make a list of all things we have control over (here’s mine) and focus on those. I’m making a plan for creating a routine around these things. I feel better already.

WHAT I CAN CONTROL:

Exercise

The food I’m eating

Taking my vitamins

Focused time with family

Connecting with friends and family

Reach out to people I’ve been meaning to connect with

Writing notes of gratitude every day

Send a thank you card to someone that’s had an impact on my life

The books I read

Planning projects for the office

Meditating

Catching up on movies or shows I’m interested in

How much screen time I get

How much time I spend watching the news

Think of ideas of how I can add value to our community even with the office closed

BODY:

Do these stretches for 10 minutes every day:

Odds are you will not be as mobile as the fellow in the video. Let us know if you are.

SOUL:

Here is a 10 minute meditation that I find very helpful:
