People don’t realize that they’re losing function until they get these signals. Did you know that you can lose up to 30-40% of your function before your body even starts giving you signs that something is wrong?

The Problem With Compensating

Let’s say you twisted your knee. You likely will favor it and start limping. You may say to yourself, “It will be fine; I’ll just put some ice on it.” Or, you may choose to put a bandage on it for a period. What you may not realize is the longer you walk on an altered gait, the more damage you end up doing. That’s because our body is trying to fix itself. It’s compensating because it doesn’t want to be in pain. Many people will do whatever they can to avoid pain, even if what they’re doing isn’t right. Here are some examples of compensating:

  • Shifting our body to one side
  • Hiking one hip higher than the other
  • Sitting differently
  • Moving differently

People often don’t realize that they’re not listening to those signals of what their body is doing. That’s because we are often so busy in our purpose-driven society. That’s why being attuned to your body and taking preventative measures is vital. You don’t want to reach the point of where pain has stopped you in your tracks.

The Importance of Self-Care

Just as it’s essential to make healthy food choices and exercise, getting chiropractic care is another way to take good care of yourself.
